Do you ever feel like you want to travel but you just don't have the time off to do it as often as you'd like?

If you're sitting there in Q2 feeling like your vacation days are already vanishing, take a breath. We know you live a real life with a real schedule. Sometimes even a 3 day weekend feels like a stretch when work is demanding. We totally get it. Not every job is flexible.

But if travel is a priority, there's a way to make the math work. The goal isn't necessarily to work less, but to work smarter. Work hard, play hard! By piggybacking your PTO onto federal holidays you potentially already have off, you can create long cohesive blocks of time. This helps you avoid rushing through a destination and coming back more exhausted than when you left.

Since it's already Q2, here's your strategic roadmap for the remainder of 2026.

Quarter 2 and 3: Summer Vibes and The Big Five Day Stretch

Juneteenth (June 19 Friday)

The Hack: Take off Monday, June 22.

The Result: A 4 day weekend. This is a great window for a quick domestic flight. If you're on the East Coast, head to Charleston or Savannah before the deep summer humidity hits. Out West? It's prime time for a mountain reset in the Tetons or Glacier National Park.

Independence Day (Observed July 3 Friday)

The Hack: Take off Wednesday, July 1 and Thursday, July 2.

The Result: A massive 5 day summer spectacle. Hit the water whether it's Lake Tahoe, Cape Cod, or a coastal drive along the Pacific Northwest. This is the ultimate mid summer break for only using 2 days of PTO.

Labor Day (September 7 Monday)

The Hack: Take off Friday, September 4.

The Result: A final 4 day summer salute. This is a perfect time to cross the pond. Europe in early September is a dream. The crowds start to thin and the prices soften but the weather's still incredible for being outside.

Quarter 4: Fall Foliage and The Nine Day Extravaganzas

Indigenous Peoples Day (October 12 Monday)

The Hack: Take off Friday, October 9.

The Result: A 4 day fall foliage adventure. Witness the colors in Vermont or the Great Smoky Mountains. If you're looking for desert vibes, Southern Utah or the high desert in New Mexico are perfect this time of year.

Veterans Day (November 11 Wednesday)

The Hack: Take off Monday and Tuesday (Nov 9 to 10).

The Result: A 5 day break while only using 2 days of PTO. Since you've got nearly a full week, venture a bit further. It's a great window for a quick trip to Mexico City or a desert escape to Palm Springs.

Thanksgiving (November 26 Thursday)

The Hack: Take off Monday through Wednesday (Nov 23 to 25).

The Result: A spectacular 9 day Thanksgiving extravaganza. This is the points and miles holy grail. If you want to skip the traditional turkey dinner, head to Central Europe to catch the opening of the iconic Christmas markets in Vienna or Prague.

Christmas and New Year's

The Hack: Since Christmas falls on a Friday, take the following week off (Dec 28 to 31).

The Result: Stay OOO from the 25th all the way through New Year's Day. Go full snow globe in Quebec City or Aspen, or soak up the holiday lights in London or NYC.

Three Rules for Success

Request Early

In most offices, holiday PTO's first come first served. Don't wait until the month before to ask for that Thanksgiving block.

Embrace the Shoulder Season

Late October and November are our favorite times to travel. It's cheaper and quieter. You'll get way more bang for your buck regardless of where you're flying from.

Coordinate with the Team

Being a proactive team player by ensuring coverage before you leave makes your time off feel more deserved and way less stressful.

It's not about having a special job or having unlimited wealth. It's just about prioritizing travel and being straightforward with your calendar so you can hit your goal of getting outside and exploring more often.
